A Spoonful Of Poison Spring Time Special - A pick of the best performers from previous months

Friday 2nd May 2008

This weeks guest performers:

THE FILTHY ORPHANS

In the space of 6 months the FOs have established themselves as die-hard regulars at Spoonful, and yet we've never got bored, because they have continuously morphed their sound from scrappy noisy anarcho squat punk to punky Captain Beefheart freak-blues to ambient shoegaze metal and onwards and outwards... one thing is for sure tho, they f***in mean it maaaan....

They sound like The Salvation Army inheirted Ronnie Wood's guitar collection falling down the stairs with the Kodo Drummers while somewhere in the corner, Jimmy Buffet barks direction after an all-night bender...

Their influences include Chuck D Weiss, Tom Waits, Lemmy,The Troggs, Captain Beefheart, Iggy Pop, Jesus and Mary Chain, Lenny Bruce, Black Flag, Bill Hicks, Nicole Ritchie, Burgess The Rhymer, Keef Richards, and Death in Vegas, just for the natty look.

BILLY TRIVIAL

Billy Trivial was born in the winter of 1886, a season marked as the coldest and bleakest for decades before and since. His father was a local butcher and his mother a poule-de-luxe. On his eleventh birthday, Billy garrotted his mother with the drone string of his trusty Fairbanks banjo, and killed his father with his Mussehl & Westphal musical saw. The rest, unfortunately, is history.

CORPORAL MACHINE AND THE BOMBERS

"It's like Madness having a fight with Chas'n'Dave in a piss-stained alley within earshot of the bow bells"
A six piece cockney folk punk band from the Essex area, featuring a tuba alongside your standard guitar, bass, drums and vocal sound.

Influences: Billy Bragg, Ian Dury, Chas and Dave, The velvet Underground.

L'IL LOST LOU

Hailing from Camden Town, acoustic female singer songwriter Lou Psyche plays a combination of dark punk rock and country music with a sassy edgyness and a refreshing lack of pretentiousness. Having previosly appeared in the Brazen Hussies, Jet Suzette, The Jealousies and in a live session on Resonance FM, Lou will be promoting her new split 7" as well as her contribution to the Fruit Machine compilation.

JAMES SEVERY

James started playing the guitar just over two years ago, and still can't really play it. The boy never really had an interest in Folk music until someone said they liked his 'Folk style storytelling.' He still doesn't have much of an interest in the world of roots revival, preferring to cite Dizzee Rascal and Spike Milligan as influences. He does like Bob Dylan and Nick Drake though.

RICHARD TYRONE JONES

Richard Tyrone Jones is a poet, raconteur and writer living mostly in London whose material relies on pseudo-science, sophistry, urban myth, random cruelty and sometimes filth. Richard also performs as his alter-ego, 55-year-old alcoholic anarchist Punk Poet Ritchie Scurvey, and was a member of Fat Fat Pope, an avant-garde comedy group described by the Observer as 'god's gift to comedy' and as 'w*nky, self-important brats' by The Independent.

DANGEROUS T

Despite appearing as the "ginger black man" in the 118 118 adverts, and catching a cricket ball in his hair in a NatWest advert, this is all Dangerous T has to say about himself : "There's only one Dangerous T. Totally original comedian must see."
He's right, but that doesn't really do him justice. He's weird. He's a bit close to the bone. Is he an oddly funny poet or an oddly rhymey comedian ? Or is he just a random nutter who got on the mic while security were having a sneaky fag ?
Either way he's one of the most differently entertaining performers to have graced the Spoonful stage...

PAUL MacJOYCE

Paul Macjoyce, author of "Verses for the Designer Underclass", is a foul-mouthed multiple-rhyming social-nationalist who blends delicate metres full of abuse for the bourgeoisie, with the choicest flatulence.

HORSEBOX

"Clever without being smug, rough without being lost, bloody brilliant" - DROWNED IN SOUND

"Catches the breeze like a nudist colony on Primrose Hill, and proves that the house of Horsebox is built on joy... like a long whiff of Bisto; comforting, warm and appetising. I hope they waft down your corridor soon." - ARTROCKER

Horsebox (the band) have already played a couple of high-profile tours with their mates THE MAGIC NUMBERS. Will Horsebox is the brains and the beard at the front of the outfit, and his solo performances perfectly display his anti-folk pop genius while teetering endearingly on the edge of drunkenness...

JJ CRASH & the LIPS

JJ Crash fled for the bright lights of London and Brighton as soon as he could afford a pair of Dr Martens and 2-Tone drainpipes. "I blame those punk rock records" said Mama Crash. "But his first music heroes were James Brown, Parliament and Funkadelic believe it or not" admitted his probation officer.

OK - to set the record straight it was hearing early Clash and The Jam that inspired JJCrash to play guitar - 3 chord songs about growing up in the burbs that made life more bearable:- his favourite album is still 'Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables' by the Dead Kennedys. JJ Crash plays protest lullabies "somewhere between the punk poetry of Patrick Fitzgerald and the wordy folk buffoonery of Jake Thackary" - with erstwhile harmonica accompaniment by photographer to the stars, Chris Lips.

KARMADILLO

The music of Karmadillo is based on the sound of a traditional yet fun South American instrument the Charango, mixed with British pop and rock melodies. Sometimes, it'll make you think of George Formby winning the Eurovision Song Contest. At others, the type of sound you'd like to hear on a Caribbean beach relaxing with a rum and coke. There is plenty of room for melancholy and sad sounds as well as the charango can be used to produce beautiful, haunting notes. Their music doesn't really fit into many of the Western 'categories' of music. Although based on an ethnic Peruvian instrument its not ethnic. Its not folk. Its not pop. Its not rock. Its not jive. Its not Indie. But its a little of all of these with a good dose of fun and melancholy.

LITTLE JOY BOX

"Where little acorns turn into Mighty Oaks, Little Joy Box is both an acorn and an oak; sensible and non-sensical; loving and loathing, a cross between a warm summers day and a slap in the face, and a consistant saluter to the Hodge-heg and other under-represented sectors of the Animal Kingdom."

Formerly of the legendary (in Guildford, and briefly on TV's Faking It) Itchy Tits All-Girl Punk Show, Little Joy Box delivers gritty yet dainty punk-soul-blues, rich melodies delivered with sweetness and venom, like The Bangles licking Courtney Love's ear before biting it off.

"Bolder than Britney Spears!" (National Enquirer, May 2007)
"A surreal mixture of Wonder Woman and Tenacious D" (Woman's Own, June 2007)

"JOY IS GOOD,
JOY IS GREAT!
JOY IS JOY,
IT'S LOVE NOT HATE!"

SCRAPPY HOOD

Scrappy Hood is the frontman and singer/songwriter of Milk Kan. After theIr debut single 'Bling Bling Baby' was championed by Chris Moyles, Jonathan Ross and Steve Lamacq on national radio it reached number 13 in the UK Indie Charts. His band then supported the Violent Femmes at a sold out Sheperds Bush Empire. Their second single, on which Scrappy duets with none other than Dolly Parton, is due for imminent release.

Taking obvious songwriting and delivery cues from Ian Dury, Television Personalites, Carter USM, Ultramagnetic MCs and John Cooper Clarke, his influences also include Johnny Cash, Smiley Culture, Ramones, Dylan, KRS1 & Cole Porter. A keen fan of a cold lager, Scrappy's performances are always beautifully imbalanced and anarchic anti-folk affairs...

ERNESTO THE NAKED POET

Ernesto Sarezale - cognitive scientist, published poet, performer, video artist, Central London Farrago Poetry Slam Champion 2006, BUTT magazine centrefold & award winning academic - with a baffling interest in postmenopausal female breasts and an unreserved dislike for spam. A refreshingly surreal and slightly unsettling adition to the live performance scene, far too good for the navel gazers to keep to themselves...
