Short descriptions first, more info down the bottom...

When the London branch of Anti-folk UK was in it's heyday, most of them used to hang out at A Spoonful of Poison every Monday in the Rhythm Factory front bar. Paul Hawkins, Ben Anstis of the Other Dances and Stu Crane of the Sneezy Ts were all mainstays of this dubious mob...

PAUL HAWKINS AND THEE AKWARD SILENCES
Expect costumes, cuddly toys, handcuffs, flowers, noise, fun & choas from "ace antifolk superstar" (Timeout) Paul Hawkins and his post-punk backing band Thee Awkward Silences. Throw in fantastical lyrics, bizarre stories and an "endearingly out of tune" vocal (Godisinthetvzine) and you have one of the most remarkable bands you'll ever have the pleasure to watch.

Once described as “the drunk British Tom Waits” (indiefolkforever), Paul Hawkins is one of the most compelling, unusual and imaginative new songwriters in Britain today. His songs evoke the emotional primacy of Nick Cave, the imaginative storytelling of Jonathan Richman and the wit of Jarvis Cocker to produce dark fantastical narratives on subjects ranging from teenage boys who throw themselves into nuclear reactors in the hope of gaining superpowers to lonely outsiders who don medical coats and operate on unsuspecting bystanders.
